Support effects in iridium-catalyzed aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol studied by modulation-excitation attenuated total reflection IR spectroscopy

The influence of the support (Al2O3, CeO2, TiO2) in oxidation benzyl alcohol (BA) to benzaldehyde on Ir-based catalysts was investigated by ATR-IR spectroscopy tandem with modulation excitation (ATR-IR-MES) at working conditions catalysts. ATR-IR-MES unveiled dissociative adsorption BA and formation adsorbed transient alkoxy species (C6H5CH2O) be key for high catalytic performance. These were detected Ir/TiO2 Ir/Al2O3 but not Ir/CeO2, which exhibited poor On pretreated hydrogen 450 °C about 84% Ir sites blocked due a titania overlayer. However, this catalyst afforded more than seven times higher activity corresponding one 300 °C, where 68% blocked. overlayer is attributed Ti cations oxygen vacancies caused pretreatment.
